Job description

SYSTEM SAFETY ENGINEER

Location: Bristol or Yeovil, UK

Job Type: Contract

Level: Senior

THE ROLE

We are currently seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to support high-profile defence and aerospace programmes within the UK. This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative engineering team responsible for developing safety solutions for complex, safety-critical systems.

Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will play a key role in the development of safety cases, hazard assessments, and certification activities across the full project lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform system safety and hazard analysis using industry-standard tools and methodologies.

• Define and manage system safety requirements to meet regulatory and customer standards.

• Develop safety case documentation and structured safety arguments using methodologies such as Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) and Claims-Argument-Evidence (CAE).

• Conduct safety assessments including:

• Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA)

• System Safety Assessments (SSA)

• Common Cause Analysis (CCA)

• Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

• Bowtie Analysis

• Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle.

• Support assurance, certification, and compliance activities for safety-critical systems.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering or a related discipline.

• Minimum 10 years' experience within the aerospace engineering sector.

• At least 6 years' experience in System Safety Engineering.

• Experience working in safety-critical, regulated industries such as aerospace, defence, rail, or automotive.

• Strong knowledge of recognised safety standards including:

• Def Stan 00-056

• MIL-STD-882E

• Experience applying safety and risk engineering processes including FHA, SSA, and CCA.

• Strong understanding of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Bowtie Analysis.

• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.

DESIRABLE SKILLS

• Formal qualification or recognised training in System Safety Engineering.

• Experience developing Service Assurance Cases.

• Previous experience supporting UK Defence programmes.

WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

• Hybrid working available.

• Candidates should be able to attend site in Bristol or Yeovil as required.

• Occasional international travel may be required.
